Holy Guacamole
Ahhh…guacamole. Is there anything that gives off summer patio vibes quite like a bowl of guacamole? Simple, fresh, vibrant, creamy…guacamole is truly a king among mashed up fruit.
Jump to RecipeIs guacamole healthy?
If you’ve ever sat with your friends in the sun, drinking margaritas and dipping chips in guacamole you’d think that moment was just too perfect to be healthy. And your right! Margaritas-sugar, alcohol terrible! Chips-deep fried, processed, salty, hello hypertension! The sun? You mean the burning ball of radiation intent on damaging your skin? Your friends?! Everybody knows Becky is toxic AF and she didn’t even Venmo you for her margaritas…and she drank four! Everybody else had two!
But guacamole. Wonderful guacamole. That lovely green blob stands alone as a guilt free treat-kind of.
So is guacamole healthy- in a word, yes. I always have to add a caveat when talking about health as one person’s healthy is another person’s toxic, it just really depends on your individual needs. I consider guacamole healthy and eat it all the time. It contains almost no sugar and is considered low carb.
Guacamole is high in fat, but it is healthy fat which can aid in lowering cholesterol. It is acceptable for low carb diets and heart healthy diets and is keto and paleo friendly as well as being an excellent source of many phytonutrients.
Where guacamole starts to break down, is when we consider what we eat it with. Chips and quac is not really a healthy snack. However, carrots or vegetables dipped in quac is fantastic! Guac on your eggs in the morning will help you feel fuller longer. A dollop of guac on a grilled protein or lean burger can add flavor and nutrients!
So when it comes to deciding if guacamole is a healthy snack, really its more about the pairings than the guacamole itself. For most diets-bring on the guac, just watch what you put in it!
How do I make Guacamole?
Honestly, this is one of the hardest recipes for me to write. I make guacamole all the time, and am known for making it really well, I just don’t use a recipe. I just mix the ingredients until it tastes right. The biggest mistake I see with people and restaurants is that they try to get too fancy with it.
Don’t try to ‘reinvent’ guacamole. It is a simple dish made from flavorful ingredients and doesn’t need a new take. I mean, it stars avocado. Avocado is like Ryan Reynolds, it doesn’t matter what its in, avocado will make it good.
So, how to make it. Simple, take some ripe avocado, some small dice red onion, a good amount of minced fresh garlic, chopped cilantro (or don’t if you don’t like cilantro), lime juice, maybe some small diced jalapeño and a dash of salt (I also add a little splash of vinegar) and that’s it.
Take those ingredients, put them together in a bowl, use a fork or even a potato masher and start mashing until smooth. That’s it. Taste it-see if it needs more lime or salt and your done. You’ve got guacamole!
With that in mind, consider the recipe I post a starting point. How much of each ingredient depend on your preference. For example, I like a bit of garlic. If you are unsure, use less. You can always add more. Play with it until you get the perfect guacamole exactly how you like it!
